Development Manager sought by a leading premium financial services company based near York. A market leader with the majority stake in their field with a growing international presence, this is a unique opportunity to join at an exciting phase of growth for the company.

The Role:

As Development Manager you’ll manage the planning, implementation and maintenance of web apps and system software, with many upcoming IT transformation and development projects. You’ll manage the development teams in providing end to end delivery and support of software products and services. Your duties will include:

  • Coordinate the development teams, allocating resources in line with strategy & objectives
  • Manage / oversee maintenance of current website file structures and related technologies
  • Manage the development cycle, coding practice and deadlines
  • Review and report on velocity of development teams; action improvements where needed
  • Project management: development cycle, coding practice & deadlines, production & implementation management
  • Work with all Departments to improve IT systems and web apps/services
  • Identify problems, evaluate trends and anticipate requirements
  • Secure services and data against perceived disasters and support in maintaining appropriate disaster recovery plans
  • Minimise waste in development process by driving an automation agenda where suitable
  • Identify risks and implement mitigating controls
  • Line manage engineers in the team, oversee and evaluate work
  • Recruit, train and motivate software engineers and monitor individual and team productivity
  • Advise on all software development management issues
  • Prioritise and assist in technical queries
  • Be first point of contact with third party technical teams
  • Maintain own technical knowledge

The successful Development Manager should have most of the following skills:

  • 5 years’ experience in Software Development
  • At least 2 years’ experience of leading and managing a development team
  • Degree educated – additional IT qualifications are beneficial but not essential
  • Technical and software development skills
  • Software Development Lifecycle and structured change management
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Business and Enterprise architecture best practices
  • Ability to understand, interpret and integrate emerging software development technologies
  • Development knowledge in different project delivery methodologies e.g. Agile, Waterfall
  • Experience of hiring and managing highly skilled software engineers
  • Have a strong understanding of system design and software architecture.
  • Able to engage with engineers, architects and Head of IT on how best to design systems
  • Strong people management skills
  • Knowledge of development in IBM (AS/400 iSeries) is desirable
  • Knowledge of key regulatory requirements in Financial Services is desirable
  • Due to office location, you’ll need to be a driver and vehicle owner
