Our client Viridor, is one of the UK’s leading waste management companies and part of the FTSE 250 Pennon Group. To continue their strategy and complement the demand in the polymers sector they are in the exciting phase of developing a new innovative and state of the art Plastics recycling and process plant. This will be one of the most technological advanced plastics recycling, processing and sorting plants in the UK. To support this evolution we are searching for an up and coming operational and commercial leader. This will be one of the only facilities in the UK marketplace with this cutting edge technology, with an installed capacity of 80,000 tonnes per annum.


This will be a full encompassing operational and commercial opportunity and a recognised high profile and strategic operation for Viridor. We are searching for an accomplished Operations and General Management expert who will become fully accountable for leading and developing their innovative and hi-tech plant to complement strategic goals. This is seen as a high profile and key development opportunity.

You will ‘model the way’ and take ownership for all stages of the facility development whilst maintaining the highest commercially viable quality standards throughout. You will develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for the processing plant optimising the performance and efficiency standards to ensure you maximise on the long term profitability and guarantee that the facility is effective and safe. Reporting to the Head of Polymers some of your key responsibilities include;

  • Day to day management of the operations management team in line with the company’s policies on Health and Safety, Environment, Sustainability, Human Resources, Financial management and the principles of sound Corporate Governance.
  • As part of the management team support the commissioning, build and testing of this new facility in order to meet deadlines to become fully operational in Summer 2020.
  • Operation – Planning through to managing the operational activities of the operational staff and labour resources efficiently and effectively and to deal with all personnel issues in line with Company Policies and Procedures.
  • Quality – Ensure all material delivered to or dispatched from site meets the relevant standards, is fit for purpose and is done so in accordance with Site Permits, Working Plans, Company Procedures and international scientific standards.
  • Lead the technical maintenance team to optimise process equipment performance, uptime, and quality of outputs and any resolution of technical problems, in line with safety and environmental standards. Champion a continuous improvement culture and assess the need for deploying lean techniques.
  • Communications interface for the facility across the site management, group, key stakeholders and external relationships.
  • Full budgetary and Profit and Loss responsibility taking all appropriate actions necessary to achieve the stated financial goals providing regular feedback to management.
  • Monitor measure and report on operational challenges, opportunities, development plans and achievements within agreed formats and timescales.


You will be an operational expert who has an enviable reputation and a demonstrable successful track record of managing and growing operational sites. Your leadership skills will be called upon to support on commercial challenges and cover the financial aspects of the operations, facility management including life cycle costs, organisational and planning challenges, as well as process engineering and optimisation techniques. Whilst recycling and resource management experience could be useful, we believe someone with a demonstrable and solid track record in polymers reprocessing, production/manufacturing management or related industries to Polymers could be very beneficial knowledge and allow Viridor to deliver more innovation thinking. Common sense, an inquisitive mind-set and excellent interpersonal skills with good technology expertise will hold you in good stead. Key skills and qualities include:

  • Of Graduate calibre and added benefit if you have COTC, NEBOSH and Six Sigma green belt accreditation.
  • Highly creative strategic thinker with a ‘hands on’ capability for problem solving that turns strategy in to a practical reality.
  • The ability to develop and inspire others through strong interpersonal skills and clear leadership abilities, excellent people and performance management skills.
  • A self-starter who is an enthusiastic flexible team player with high expectations of self and others.
