Transport Manager sought by a leading Builders Merchant established for over 30 years with two successful branches around London. This role will be based at the Welham Green depot.

The Role:

Reporting to the Head of Operations and working closely with the Warehouse Manager, you’ll manage 13 drivers of various vehicles including HGV, Moffett, HIAB etc, ensuring the smooth running of the transport function, increasing efficiency to provide excellent customer service.

You will:

  • Recruit, lead, train & motivate a team of drivers to ensure the best level customer service
  • Arrange replacement drivers and vehicles when necessary
  • Plan, organise and manage the routing of deliveries and collections
  • Proactively develop operational improvements, focusing on cost reductions and customer satisfaction, and embrace any implemented changes
  • Use Jobs Per Vehicle, PDA usage and gate times to exceed transport performance targets
  • Ensure the vehicle fleet is well maintained, holding accurate documentation and records
  • Regularly update and report on transport KPIs
  • Manage costs ensuring they are in line with budgets, sourcing parts from alternate suppliers and raising purchase orders
  • Represent the company, portraying a professional image to customers, potential customers
  • Motivate your team via annual team building events
  • Ensure completion of Transport/O licence audit processes & procedures and periodic driver licence & qualification checks, and maintain fuel use/re-fuelling processes
  • Ensure locations & vehicles are maintained, including documentation and reporting systems
  • Update and maintain yearly planner, planning at least 6 months ahead
  • Regularly download digital Tacho cards and vehicle units
  • Ensure timely management of driver infringements
  • Help maintain current quality accreditations and work towards attaining new accreditations
  • Lead in meeting obligations under the ‘Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 1999’ and ‘Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013’ (RIDDOR)
  • Provide support and expertise to line management in incident investigation and reporting
  • Facilitate all forms of risk assessment and act as a final authority where required
  • Inspect fleet, safe loading/unloading, checking PMIs, MOTs, tacho calibrations and services
  • Ensure defects are repaired and signed off (un-roadworthy vehicles area clearly marked with VOR and keys locked away)
  • Compliance: ensure compliant with: transport policies, procedures and legislation, systems, procedures and processes
  • Health & Safety: accident investigation, monthly communication strategy, advising line managers on implementing legislation, and performing prevention inspections

The successful Transport Manager should have most of the following:

  • Previous experience in a Transport Manager role
  • Man management experience of a transport team with a ‘can do’ approach
  • Demonstrable past successes of improving customer service by refining transport efficiencies
  • Builders merchant experience is beneficial but not essential
  • Experience of improving transport department efficiency
  • Experience of ensuring compliance to relevant H&S legislation
  • Able to work newly introduced split shift from 5.30am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday, and alternate Saturdays of 5.30am to 1.00pm
